Dreams are defined as thoughts, emotions and images that occur while we are asleep, mostly at night.
That doesn’t mean that dreams cannot occur during the day, if one falls into deep sleep during the day one can have a dream. Dreams are an inevitable occurrence for us all. We all dream, and our dreams carry a message. I have met people who ignored the divine message in their dreams and ended up in the actual situation they dreamed about. The world of dreams is like Gods movie theater where the movies of our lives are played out.
I have had numerous directional and warning dreams. I wouldn’t be where i am today if i did not action those dreams. That said, there are some important truths that should not be ignored when it comes to understanding the world of dreams. Let me share a few of them below.
- Not all dreams are from God.
Dreams have three distinct sources. It can come from our own experiences i.e. joys and fears, it can come from the devil i.e. if one has engaged in witchcraft, the occult, watches horror movies etc… dreams can also be a direct message from God to you, the experience you have in the dream will inform you of the origin of your dream. Remember when it comes to defining our dreams origin, the thumb rule is, does it align with the scriptures? Note that dreams from God can also carry a shocking or disturbing message, but it does not carry the spirit of fear with it, it comes with an open redemptive door. Check the scripture below.
2nd Timothy 1:7 NKJV
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
2. God reveals to redeem.
Most of us have heard the above statement used, especially to encourage one who has had a warning dream. If you carefully study this subject through the entire Bible, you will realize that there always exists a way of escape, ( Gods mercy) extended to mankind through a repentant heart that’s accompanied by a change of course. The fact that God warned you in a dream is a show of His love and care for you. Think about the dream that Pharoah had, was it not to redeem the people from the destruction of famine? Josephs interpretation of the dream saved the entire nation of Egypt and Israel. Both the Old and the New Testament contain numerous accounts, of how God used dreams to communicate his great redemptive plan to mankind, for example its through a dream that Joseph ( Jesus’ earthly dad) was instructed to arise take the Child and His Mother and flee to Egypt. That was a directional dream that kept the Savior safe from the killing of babies ordered by king Herod.
Mathew 2:13 NKJV
“Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.”
3. Pray immediately after the dream.
Do not ignore your dreams, if possible wake up and pray about it immediately. The human spirit does not sleep when our bodies sleep, it is in constant communication with the spiritual realm, and the best time to receive clear communication from that realm, is when our bodies are in resting mode, during sleep. When we pray immediately after a dream we will be able to cancel what needs to be cancelled and affirm what needs to be affirmed in our lives, evil will be stopped and good will be established. Prayer changes things, more so, the prayer of a believer who is in Jesus Christ and has anchored his faith and life in Christs finished works, that believer fulfils the true definition of a righteous man according to the standard of the gospel. check the scripture below.
James 5:16 NKJV
“Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”
4. If its an instructional, directional or warning dream, seek interpretation, clarification or counsel and do something about it.
Our obedience is fundamental in our walk with God. Each instruction from God is for our good and should be met with simple obedience. The Apostle Paul said that the Apostleship he received was to bring all nations to the obedience of faith. Check the scripture below.
1 Romans 1:5 NKJV
“Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name.”
The Word remains our main counsel when it comes to dream interpretation, if the dream contradicts Gods Word, then its not from God and should be rejected in prayer. If its in line with the Word of God, then it should be promptly obeyed, each instruction has a time frame attached to it. Once the time for its fulfillment comes, its beyond our control. We should take the promptings of the Holy Spirit seriously, our lives depend on it. For example if the Holy Spirit warns you not to take a certain plane flight because of an imminent danger, and regardless of the warning you still take the flight, there is no guarantee that you will survive if that particular plane crushes, the time frame for the obedience of that instruction has passed. That’s just one example among many. Obedience to Gods instructions should be prompt.
I urge you to pay attention to your dreams, its an open channel of communication between God and man.
Be blessed!
